Activites to play with your child:

1. Ask the child to identify each food item (other than the condiments) and to separate them into the basic food groups; meat, dairy, grain, fruit and vegetables. Have the child count the items in each category. For example, how many pieces of bread are there? How many slices of cheese?

2. Place all the food items into a pile. Count the number of pieces with the child beginning with one and ending at thirty three. Repeat the activity until the child is able to count them independently.

3. Have the child identify the colours and obvious shapes of each food item.

4. Ask the child to make a sandwich. Specify the kind of sandwich you would like and list the order in which the sandwich ingredients should be selected.

5. Place four or more pieces of food in front of the child. Let him/her study thembefore asking the child to close his/her eyes while you remove one piece. Ask the child to identify which piece was removed.

6. Take turns being a restaurant server and a dining customer. Discuss which types of sandwiches are generally more appropriate for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
