Activites to play with your child:

1.  Talk about the concepts of same and different.  Ask the child to sort the cookies into groups that are the same shape or colour (flavour).  Ask the child to name the specific shapes and colours of the cookies, then ask them to sort the cookies into groups of solid cookies and cookies with a hole in the centre.

2.  Talk about patterns.  Sort the cookies by shape or colour.  Show the child three or more cookies in a pattern and ask him/her to place the next cookie in the series.  For example, you might place heart, star, heart and ask the child, "What shape comes next?"

3.  Place four or more toppings in front of the child.  Let him/her study them before asking the child to close his/her eyes while you remove one piece.  Ask the child to identify which piece was removed.  Increase the challenge by gradually adding more toppings.

4.  Ask the child to mix and match the toppings on all the cookies while following simple directions to create cookies to order.  For example, you might ask the child to put the round pink topping with sprinkles on a heart-shaped cookie or to put the chocolate chip topping on a vanilla cookie.  A delicious way to introduce complex directions! 

5.  Use the cookie cutters as stencils by placing the cookie cutter, wide edge down on a piece of paper, and tracing the inside or outside of the shape for a fun and creative design activity.
